The 36th annual Eastern States Open Squash Tournament was held at the Yale Club in New York City, January 27-28, 2007. Although many of the players come from the northeast, the tournament also draws players from as far away as Utah and Texas. After the Nationals, the Eastern States is probably the most prominent tournament on the softball squash circuit, and a number of this year's participants plan to travel to Portland Oregon for this year's Nationals.
Long-time Maugus Club member Lee Engler won teh 75+ flight without dropping a single game. The first game of the final was over relatively quickly, but Lee's opponent seemed to get his second wind in the second game, which was quite close. The third game was more like the first, and Lee was glad to close the match out in three games.

The annual Boston regional Chinese Badminton Tournament took place over the Labor Day Weekend, on Sunday, September 3rd, in MIT's Zesiger Sports Center. Fourteen teams participated in the tournament, which actually consisted of two separate tournaments. One was a Mixed Team Tournament in which a match between two teams consisted of five matches: Men's Singles, Men's Doubles, Women's Singles, Women's Doubles and Mixed Doubles. Since there were significantly more men than women players, the second was a Men's Team Tournament for men only, and a match between two teams consisted of three matches, two Men's Singles and one Men's Doubles. The Mixed team tournament was won by the Mulan team, among whose members were two strong Maugus players, Brandon Lai and Marc Lai. The Men's team tournament was won by another Maugus pair, the father and son You Family Team consisting of Zhiping and Eric You. The largest circulation Chinese newspaper in the United States, the Chinese World Journal, carried an article on the event, with the one-inch headline "Fighting with Racquets, the You Family Army Grabs the Men's Team Championship."

The PanAm Men's (Thomas Cup) and Women's (Uber Cup) team championships took place Feb. 15-18, 2006 in Lima, Peru. In an amazing victory, the USA teams won both events against very strong competition from countries all over North and South America. Maugus Club's Melinda Keszthelyi played Women's Doubles, winning all three of her hard-fought matches against Trinidad, Brazil, and Canada. Especially exciting was that this is the first time in more than twenty years that the USA Uber team has beaten Canada. Maugus Pro Andy Chong was coach and team manager for the USA Thomas team. Our warmest congratulations to both of them. More detailed results can be found at www.tournamentsoftware.com.

Szilvi got off to a slow start and lost the first two games, but she came alive at 3-6 in the third game and never looked back. In the 3.5 Consolation final, Corey Schafer fought hard against veteran competitor Vera Van Middlesworth of the University Club, but Vera edged out Corey in the fifth game after a neck-and-neck battle.
On the Men's side, Lee Engler reached the finals of the 70+ division, but William Jansen of the Boston Sports Club prevailed to win the Championship.
Maugus' Lee Engler won the 75+ championship at the Nationals in New Haven, CT, March 18-19, 2006, adding a fourth victory to his three previous national titles. Maugus was well represented in the 2005 Senior International in Miami with the following results:
Congratulations to all!
The 2005 Mid-West Classic tournament, held on Jan. 14th-16th in Terre Haute, IN attracted players from the Northeast and California along with the midwest locals. Maugus was represented by Philip Troke, Daphne Chang and Neil Davies. Philip Troke was unable to reproduce his results from last year where he played in three finals, winning one of them, but overall Maugus had good success as shown below:
This badminton tournament was held Dec. 18-19, 2004. Azam Ali won 1st place in U17 singles; Sasha Boyarin and Azam Ali won 1st place in U17 boys' doubles.
The Junior squash players continue to be very active in local and regional tournaments. In November 2004, the Groton Future Stars attracted a group of Maugus juniors, including Matt Ma, Abhinov Kumar, Mike Lillie, Conor and Liam McClintock, and Corey Schafer. All played very well against some tough opponents. Corey came in second place in Girls Under 15 age group, and Liam won the boys Under 13 and Under 15 age groups. Brown University held their toournament in December, and Mike Lillie, Corey Schafer, James Fulham, and Liam McClintock participated and several brought home trophies. The Massachsuetts Open tournament in early January attracted some of the best juniors in the country, including our Maugus players. Mike Lillie, Conor and Liam McClintock, Matt Ma, Grey Riley, Rhetta Nadas, James Fulham, Corey Schafer, Charles Gertler, and Eliana Saltzman played extremely well, and many of them placed first, second and third in their divisions.
